FrogSkin™(for Inkjets) was designed with many advantages in mind. Click the links below to see more information.

While FrogSkin™ (for Inkjets) is a great product with some wonderful advantages, it does not work in all applications. When deciding to purchase a roll of FrogSkin™ please consider the following:

  1. It transfers using the heat from a hot-roll laminator
  2. It transfers to only solvent or eco-sol based prints
  3. It transfers to only smooth glossy vinyl surfaces
  4. It loses its protective attributes when it is stretched
  5. It has shown transfer issues with Arlon DPF6000 vinyl

FrogSkin™ is a very unique product that when used with the right combination of equipment, materials and application, can save you money, time, and effort.

Advantages:

Excellent protection against chemicals

FrogSkin™ provides an excellent level of protection against common chemicals such as cleaning products, gasoline, isopropyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, brake fluid, and bleach. Many solvent based inks printed onto vinyl and left unprotected will wipe off immediately when rubbed with these chemicals. Protected prints can typically be rubbed over 50 times with no signs of failure.


Good resistance against abrasion
Most full, mild, and eco solvent based inks are removed with 50 passes of an industry-standard abrasion wheel. FrogSkin™ protected graphics typically withstand 200 passes of the same industry-standard abrasion wheel with out any signs of color loss. We've seen signifant protection against fingernail scratches, scrub sponges, and pink pearl erasers.

Some UV absorbing properties
FrogSkin™ provides some protection against harmful UV light, which is proven to cause fading and color change. Prints protected with FrogSkin will display a slower rate of fade and color change compared to unprotected prints.

Economical in price
FrogSkin™ is available for $425 for a 100 yard roll x 54 inches wide. This price translates to roughly $0.31/sqft. Traditional vinyl laminates with much less benefits are well over this price.

Saves about 6 minutes per job using a print, cut then laminate workflow. (efficient for Roland users)
FrogSkin™ can be applied AFTER the vinyl has been plotter cut. Because FrogSkin™ is an ink and not a vinyl, it does not bridge the gap of the cut-lines. This feature also allows for easy weeding. Printers like the Roland VersaCAMM and Roland SOLJET that have the capabilities to print and cut can now print their graphic and then cut their graphic in one operation, and then later (before or after weeding) apply FrogSkin. The slow searching for registration dots on your printer/cutters has ended with the use of FrogSkin.

Easier and better plotter cutting of protected graphics
Graphics coated with FrogSkin™ need less blade pressure and can be cut in more fine detail than graphics coated with a thicker vinyl laminate. FrogSkin is also not prone to delamination on corners of cut graphics that sometimes occurs with self-adhesive laminates.

Will not "yellow" over time
FrogSkin™ is clear and does not give a yellow tint to the protected graphic on application or through it's "life" like traditional vinyl laminates. Our product maintains your print color which is ideal when matching corporate identities.

No drying time needed
FrogSkin™ is formulated to eliminate drying time to cure. Graphics can be applied immediately after being coated with FrogSkin™.

Won't shrink or de-laminate off the printed graphic
FrogSkin™ is not susceptible to the sort of shrinkage that can lead to failure of prints protected with self-adhesive vinyl laminates.

Can be used as an Anti-Graffiti protectant
Graphics coated with traditional vinyl lamination films are prone to damage by graffiti because the solvent/ink in marker pens and spray paints readily key into the vinyl surface and are therefore difficult to remove. FrogSkin™ is not likely to absorb graffiti and with the careful choice and use of solvents, graffiti may be able to be removed without damaging the FrogSkin™ protected graphics. Pre-testing your technique and products is essential.

Increases the gloss 'pop' finish on printed graphics
FrogSkin™ coated graphics exhibit a constant gloss finish across both printed and unprinted areas to give graphics the extra 'pop'.

Protects banner prints
FrogSkin™ protects smooth-glossy banner material without the risk of delamination.

Easy to use and apply
FrogSkin™ rolls are light-weight, quick and easy to setup on a laminator, produce little waste, and do not utilize the take-up roller. When using this product, it is easy to produce wrinkle-free results. Also, when the instructions are followed, FrogSkin™ is not prone to sticking to the laminator rollers, so the vinyl can be slightly narrower than the roll of FrogSkin™. No trimming required!

Does not introduce a curl to the printed graphics
FrogSkin™ does not retain any of the tension applied during the lamination process. Once the carrier is removed, the graphics can be easily and tightly rolled, shipped and unrolled.

Hardly visible once applied
FrogSkin™ is so thin it is measured in microns not mils. Since the product is an ink and not a vinyl or polyester, it does not reduce the conformable nature of the substrate to which it is applied. FrogSkin™ also does not materially add to the weight or thickness of the printed graphic.

Saves 2 minutes on average for each laminator setup
FrogSkin™ is has no adhesive so it is easy to handle and wind through the rollers of your laminator. It is also fast to setup because there is no liner take-up. The liner is easily removed post-laminating.

 

Considerations:

 

It transfers using the heat from a hot-roll laminator
To achieve a good, durable coating, it is essential that the instructions are carefully followed and that suitable equipment is used. Recommended top roll temperature needs to be heated to 95°C/200°F. The laminator needs to be well maintained with a constant temperature across the roller and no damage to the top or bottom roller coatings.

It transfers to only solvent or eco-sol based inks
FrogSkin™ coats common 'full solvent', 'mild solvent', and 'eco-sol' inkjet printing ink. It is not currently compatable with UV cured inks or aqueous inks.

It transfers to only smooth glossy vinyl surfaces
FrogSkin™ was designed to transfer onto smooth, gloss, self-adhesive vinyls. Some smooth banner materials have been proven to work, but we strongly recommend you do your own testing first for your own particular application. FrogSkin™ is not compatable with matte finish vinyls or textured substrates.

It loses its protective attributes when it is stretched

FrogSkin™ provides its best level of protection when the printed vinyl graphics are not stretched. When stretched, FrogSkin™ still gives a significant level of protection to the printed vinyl graphics. However, this level of protection is reduced the more the graphics are stretched. What happens is that stretching causes the product to thin out and/or have microscopic cracks. The cracks can be accentuated even more when they are heated with a heat gun. We therefore don't recommend FrogSkin™ for auto-wraps.

FrogSkin™ is therefore ideally suited for use on graphics that will not be stretched during application.


It has shown transfer issues with Arlon DPF6000 vinyl
We have found that this product had difficulties bonding to Arlon DPF6000 vinyl especially with the use of application tape. If you intend to use Arlon vinyls we recommend you testing the results before you begin mass production.
